Works a charm

I've gotten several anti-immigration e-mails lately from friends, both right and left -- excuse me, anti-'illegal' immigration. Sometimes I sigh and let them go unanswered; sometimes I tell them:

We are a nation of immigrants. We first stole the country from the Native Americans who were here before us. Now we want to shut the door and tell no one else they can come in, not even the Mexicans that we stole Texas from.

Doesn't seem fair, does it?

But as long as the powers that be can keep us worrying about immigration, we won't pay any attention to the trillions, that is TRILLIONS, of dollars that we are giving to the greedy bankers who destroyed our economy in the first place -- or the hundreds of billions of dollars we are giving to the Defense Department to murder Afghanistanis and Iraqs, or the billions we are giving to the insurance companies so they can deny us healthcare.

Works like a charm, doesn't it?

Whenever I point out to those people that I myself am only a couple generations from immigrants (3 of my grandparents came in as small children), they always say, "But your family came here legally". True, they did - I think that's largely because it's fairly difficult to sneak across an ocean. Given that they were fleeing injustice, persecution and dire poverty (i.e. the same reasons today's illegal imigrants are coming in) I'm fairly sure they'd have come in any way they could get there. And if they hadn't then, they surely would have as adults, in the face of the looming Holocaust.

The only law being violated is the one of hospitality. I also think all the hoopla about illegal immigrants is code for anti-Mexican. People don't rant about all the Irish that are here without papers.

Agree, except I think it's lexx specifically anti-Mexican and more generally anti-person of color.

And, for that matter, they aren't concerned with 'illegals' coming across the border from Canada (not many of them Canadians [g]) either, another indication that anti-Mexican is the operative word.
