I haven't done the math, but this is metaphorically if not literally true.

From an email sent me on the cost of gas:

Ever wonder why printers are so cheap?
So they have you hooked for the ink.

Someone calculated the cost of the ink at...
$5,200 a gallon.

That doesn't surprise me at all. When a refill cart only contains 15 ml of ink and I also suspect that you throw away 5 ml of that clinging to the inside of the 'empty' when the printer tells you to change.

Toner cartiridges as well.

Ditto with the drum of a laster printer. That's set to 'expire' after a specific number of uses, whether or not the pages have been dense or lightly printed. If you can get the reset code for the drup you can often get another couple of months out of a 'dead' drum. The drums cost almost as much to replace as the printer.

I used to be able to pull out a cartridge and shake it to get a lot more pages. Now you get the equivalent of a 'tilt' message if you try that simple technique.

THAT IS ESPECIALLY TRUE IF IT IS A LEXMARK PRINTER - (FIRST-HAND EXPERIENCE).

Our Lexmark color printer was a waste of money. Never did more than a passable job at best and we soon gave up on it. It's now a dust catcher.
